Aircraft Maintenance - My Other Life

I couldn't of picked a more labor-intensive and stressful career. What was I thinking?

In my blog the seeker, I like to post about my days as a Commercial Fisherman
and my days of being my being own boss, owning a business, and the love of the ocean.
That was back in the 80's and the fishery was already in trouble from foreign overfishing
and too many fishing enterprises harvesting the same species...the Cod.

Not heeding fisherman's pleas that giant draggers and freezer ships from Russia and
other nations where destroying our fishery off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
Similar occurrences where happening in Norway and Iceland. Finally the Government
of Canada dropped the hammer and the fishery was closed at near extinction.
With all the resources to rely upon for information why do Governments wait until
it is gone too far...global warning ring a bell. "That's years down the road before we
have to deal with that...tell everybody to relax." Sound familiar.

I saw this coming and decided to give up my first business and seek a stable career
to support my family before it was too late.

So, I went to the local "Manpower" office and asked for advise and counseling. I was
given a list of opportunities to pursue that needed people across the country. Being
in alphabetical order I didn't have to go down the list very far...Aircraft Maintenance
Engineer seemed to pop out at me.

Being mechanically inclined I looked through the job description and testimonials from
Engineers and Mechanics. The salary scale looked good so that was it...my mind was
made up and drove down to the Community College and signed up for the 2 year
course. The quicker the better to get this going.

My next article will be about the shock of transition from college to working for "the
man" and the dreaded Midnight shift.
