Snow Birds
Where I live, Tim Horton's is a meeting place for groups of "regulars" to
enjoy a cup of "Timmies", an excellent, addictive brew of coffee. Actually
it was headlined this week that Tim Hortons is one of Canada's top 10
companies and plans to go International.
I pass through almost every morning and listen to the morning chatter of sports,
specially Hockey this time of year, politics and generally everything under the
sun. With the cold temperatures there is more talk of the warm sunny south
and trips being planned and those that are leaving in a few days.
What I am doing?...I'm going farther North, leaving tomorrow the 22nd actually,
to spend a few days with my Parents in Gander, Newfoundland and return
on Tuesday, the 26th of January if all goes well and no delayed departures.
Speaking of delayed...I made my annual winter trip to Gander last year and
as I was packing my bags for the return a winter storm advisory was being
announced over the radio. Flicking on the TV and checking the Weather
station...40 Centimeters of snow!
I knew right then, I'm not going anywhere and the next morning another 50 CM
was forecast. Holy Cow! In total, over 100 cm fell, the most at one time in years.
On the 3rd day I finally watched the wheels of the aircraft I was on, lift off the snow
covered runway. In most places..it would probably be 5 days with all that snow
before things got moving right but accustomed to this, the snow clearing equipment
in Gander was on the roads and even during the heaviest snow ...traffic was still moving.
The long range forecast calls for mild temperatures and rain upon my return so...
wish me luck!
